Chalazion surgery

Chalazion surgery is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision on the inner surface of the eyelid to curette the contents of the chalazion. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes and, as the incision is internal, it does not leave a visible scar.

Chalazion surgery: procedure, benefits and risks

What is a chalazion?

A chalazion is a small bump that forms on the eyelid due to the obstruction of a gland (meibomian gland). It can be annoying, sometimes painful, and may persist despite medical treatments.

The surgical procedure

  • Local anesthesia : The eyelid is numbed by a small anesthetic injection, making the procedure painless.
  • Incision : A small cut is made, usually on the inside of the eyelid (conjunctival side), which prevents any visible scar.
  • Curettage : The inflammatory content (cyst or granuloma) is emptied using a surgical instrument that looks like a very small spoon.
  • Duration : The procedure generally lasts less than 5-10 minutes and is done on an outpatient basis (return home the same day).
  • Bandage : A pressure dressing may be applied for a few hours to limit temporary post-operative swelling.

Benefits

  • Fast chalazion resolution.
  • Relief of symptoms (discomfort, pressure, pain, blurred vision).
  • Avoid recurrences at the same site.
  • Improved cosmetic appearance.

Possible risks and side effects

  • Slight pain or discomfort after surgery.
  • Bruise, temporary swelling.
  • Chalazion recurrence (rare).
  • Infection (very rare, prevented by post-operative care).
  • Small internal scar (not visible externally).

After the intervention

  • Antibiotic/anti-inflammatory eye drops or ointment are usually prescribed for a few days.
  • Avoid eye-rubbing or applying makeup while healing.
  • A post-operative check may be planned depending on the case.

Conclusion

Chalazion surgery is a simple, fast and effective procedure that is well tolerated by the majority of patients and with a low risk of complications.
