Pseudophakic intraocular lenses (IOLs)

Pseudophakic intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial implants that replace the eye's natural lens, typically during a cataract surgery. They restore vision by correctly focusing light onto the retina. These lenses can be monofocal, multifocal, EDOF, and toric, depending on the patient's needs. The procedure is quick, very well-controlled, and benefits from constant improvements, making cataract surgery one of the most commonly performed and safest procedures worldwide.

3-piece IOL: composed of a central optic and two flexible haptics, often implanted in the sulcus in cases of capsular rupture. This device is also suitable for severe ametropia when single-piece intraocular lenses are not available in extreme dioptric powers.

Monofocal Monobloc IOL: a single-piece implant made of one material with integrated optics and haptics, designed for implantation in the capsular bag. It corrects vision at a single distance (far or near) and requires the use of glasses to see clearly at all distances postoperatively.

Multifocal IOL: allows simultaneous vision at multiple distances (far, intermediate, near) through specific optical zones to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after the procedure.

EDOF IOL: provides continuous vision from distance to intermediate by extending the depth of field through a unique optical design, without creating multiple images like multifocal IOLs.

Toric IOL: corrects corneal astigmatism and is implanted in the capsular bag. Available in monofocal, EDOF, and multifocal versions, depending on visual needs.

Accommodative IOLs aim to restore true accommodation, but to date, none have demonstrated conclusive efficacy. They nevertheless represent a promising avenue for the future of premium IOLs, in contrast to the pseudo-accommodation currently in use.

Depth of field by IOL type:

  • Monofocal : sharpness at a single distance (far, intermediate, or near)
  • Multifocal : three distinct simultaneous peaks (far, intermediate, and near)
  • EDOF : Continuous vision from far to intermediate and up to near vision with the "mini-monovision" technique.

What are pseudophakic intraocular lenses (IOLs)?

IOLs are artificial implants used to replace the eye's natural lens in cases of cataract, when it is removed for other medical reasons, or in the case of aclear lens exchange to reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

These IOLs restore vision by precisely focusing light onto the retina, thereby offering a lasting improvement in visual clarity.

What are the different types of IOLs?

They are available in several types, adapted to the patient's specific needs:

  • Monofocal IOLs: Provide clear vision without glasses at a single distance (far or near), often requiring glasses after surgery.
  • Premium IOLs: Offer vision at multiple distances (near, intermediate, and far), reducing the need for glasses after surgery.
  • Toric lenses: Designed to correct astigmatism, both the IOL monofocal that premium are available in a toric.

How does it work?

Pseudophakic lens implantation is performed during cataract surgery orclear lens exchange, which are common procedures typically performed under local/topical anesthesia. Recovery is quick, with improved visual results within the first few days following the procedure.
