ESCRS 2025 Copenhagen: training course director
At the ESCRS 2025 annual conference in Copenhagen, Dr. Hammer led a training course dedicated to surgeons wishing to specialize in cornea entitled: “The Lost Art of Penetrating Keratoplasty: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners”.

Transfixing keratoplasty: maintaining an essential skill in modern surgery
This didactic course for ophthalmic surgeons wishing to specialize in cornea at a beginner to intermediate level was organized in collaboration with internationally renowned colleagues and mentors:
- Professor Bruce Allan
- Dressage. Su-yin Koay
- Dr. Luis Garcia Onrubia
- Dr. Johnson Yan Ning Neo
We proposed a structured and progressive approach to transfixing keratoplasty (PKP), a technique that is now less frequently used due to the rise of lamellar and endothelial techniques such as DALK, the DMEK And the DSAEK, but which remains an essential skill in the arsenal of modern corneal surgery.
This participation is part of a continuous process of training, the sharing of expertise and the maintenance of the highest standards in ophthalmological surgery, for the direct benefit of patient care.
For surgeons who were unable to attend in 2025, this course will be offered again on the occasion of ESCRS 2026 annual conference, which will take place in London from 11 to 15 September 2026.
