Implantable ICL lenses in Switzerland

Correcting high myopia without touching the cornea, by Dr Arthur Hammer, FMH ophthalmic surgeon

Md-PhD, FEBO, FEBOS-CR, CertLRS, PGDip-CRS, FWCRS

An ICL is an implant placed in front of the natural crystalline lens, which stays in place. It corrects myopia and hyperopia, including high prescriptions, and any associated astigmatism with toric models. Dr Arthur Hammer, FMH ophthalmic surgeon, implants these lenses in Lausanne.

Unlike laser surgery, an ICL removes no corneal tissue. That is precisely what makes it the option of choice where the cornea is too thin or too irregular, where dry eye is marked, or where the refractive error exceeds the limits of safe corneal treatment.

The safety of an ICL rests on sizing. A poorly sized implant carries a risk of complications, which makes measuring the dimensions of the eye every bit as decisive as the procedure itself. Dr Hammer's corneal and refractive surgery specialisations, as MD-PhD, FEBOS-CR, CertLRS and PGDip-CRS, prepares directly for that demand.

The implant is designed to stay in place for the long term while remaining reversible: it can be removed or replaced if vision changes. That reversibility with the possibility to combine ICL with corneal laser surgery shape long-term follow-up, from the onset of presbyopia through to cataract surgery, where the implant is removed in the same operating session.

Choosing the size and power of the implant rests on precise measurements: biometry, corneal topography and tomography, anterior segment OCT, anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell count.
